Books & Movies

Books and Movies!

They are our methods of entertainment, they make us laugh, they make us cry and some of them….are really boring.Everyone has different tastes.Trying to convince my friends that the northern lights in an amazing book was a fail or their shock horror reaction when I told them how much I hate films like Madagascar,Open Season (they are so cheesy!).But I want to tell you about some of my favourite all time reads and views. And you can share yours either below or in your page.

Teen fiction

Teen fiction is infectious.

You find or are reccommended a book, you read the book, you reccomend the book and it’s spread. You end up reading tons of books like it and before long that’s all you’ll be reading.

That happened with me,walked into a bookstore and saw Twilight . My friend had read Twilight and had reccomended it to me. My friends at school had no idea about it yet, they were still mulling over the 9-12 books and I bought that book,I walked out the store with twilight (if you don’t know yet what it is click here)I read it on holiday,I avidly read this wonderful book that was so dark and romantic.I couldn’t put the thing down. I loved twilight, the first book I mean. I recommended the first one to my friends at school and read the rest happily.I love the 1st book of twilight. It was about vampires

I read the Fallen Series and loved it too.It was dark,it was romantic and I loved it.It was about angels.

I read I am Number 4 and loved that too.It was set in the view of a guy and it was like non-geeky

sci-fi.It was about aliens.

I read The Hunger Games and loved it. I liked how only a tiny bit was focused on the romantic side of it and that the main character isn’t a feeble maiden in distress but a suvivor and a warrior. This book is totally irelivant to the subject,I just wanted to put it in here. ;P

However the love for ‘I am Number 4′ ,’Fallen’ and ‘Twilight’ soon wavered when I tried to read The Vampire Diaries. It wasn’t necesseraliy that book in paticular it just made me realise that the books had similaritys. It’s always a new person in town. The male tends to be supernatural. The girl and the supernatural, super strong, super sensitive guy become a couple. There is another guy who comes along to try and win the girl over. The other guy just happens to be the males enmy. And of course to female stays faithful to her lover. Come on writers!Write something different!

Just Go With It -Movie Review

Just go with it looks like a trashy rom-com and it is but that’s sometimes exactly what you want.

Adam Sandler plays Danny Macbee;a man who manages to get the women by saying he’s a troubled marrige. He once had his heart broken on his wedding day and got sympathy from a girl and it has escalated since then. WHen he meets Palmer at a party things are different,he doesn’t use his old trick but Palmer finds the ring and clinging to his cover Danny say’s he’s in a marrige in crisis but Palmer is determined to meet the wife and ask her about it. Danny then asks his college Katherine Murphy (Jennifer Aniston) to play his wife.Kathy’s kids become involved and it ends up with everyone going to Hawiiincluding a crazy german and a marrige in Hawii.

This movie is so funny,I sat on the sofa laughing so hard. The german who plays Kathrines ‘boyfriend’ just for me steals the show.He tells Palmer how he is a sheep salesman and they’re out having dinner when a girl runs in going “Is anyone a sheep doctor,”or something and Palmers like “He is,” and Eddie (crazy german and Danny’s cousin) is like ‘Okay what have I gotten myself into,’ in the end he does manage to save the sheep which is hilarous.

I also like in this movie how Palmer never finds out they weren’t married which is good because I hate it when they have the awkward ‘I can’t believe you lied to me’ scenes.

The only thing I would change about this movie is I would add a scene where they explain to Penny that they were never married and Panny is okay with it.

Just Go With It 9/10

Harry Potter Hype

The films are over and for those film fans who have not yet read the books now is the perfect opportunity. The finality which the films concocted is depressing almost everyone but of course there is always pottermore (what ever that is, it’s a bit vague) which comes out in October to the general public.Pottermore for me is depressing because it’s like a relay of the books which have been around for ages trying to get STILL more people to read it.In an honest opinion JK Rowling should stop trying to mess around with wizards and write something else.

I remember trying to read the books when I was about 8 but unfortunately got bored 3/4 of the way through The Philosphers Stone(Sorcerer’s Stone for those Americans) and I remember as I ceremoniously removed the bookmark slowly and placed the book on a small table before walking away. I just was bored, I probably had the temptation of another book overshadowing the first Harry Potter. It was just unlucky.

Ever since I have insulted the books but my friend who is CRAZY about Harry Potter (yes, she was the one in the cinema who came dressed as a wizard) went even more crazy when I told her Twilight was better than Harry Potter so I thought it’s been long enough and I should try again after all I’m older and I read 10X faster. So I finished the current book and rushed over to the family bookshelf. All 7 were there, faded colours with wrinkled spines and wavy pages.I picked up the first book, sat on the sofa and read.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all the movies in the wrong order and with a couple of years between each viewing.I’m a very recent fan.My other Harry Potter crazy friend chooses to watch it and we sit and watch them.I liked them but never really connected with them I just was a bit confused as to who everyone was and to be honest I felt completely out of the HP loop. My fandom came about all because Harry Potter

and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was showing on my birthday and we decided to go and see it. With a week to go I shoved all of the books I was reading aside and told myself to at least read the last one. I read it and loved the amazing ending that although I was occasionally confused I understood more than ever.I saw the film a week later and since haven’t been able to see Harry Potter in the same light,it is epic. After the film and book birthday I told myself that one day I would read them again. However other

books cropped into interest and I forgot to read about the boy that lived.

6 months later and the second part of The Deathly Hallows was released. I went to go and see it obviously and was left speechless. I had only just got a hold of Harry Potter and now he was leaving but there will always be the books…

A few days ago I read the first book – all of it and I was annoyed, annoyed I hadn’t read it sooner. Philosophers Stone is more of an introduction to the scene and characters and U felt that there would be better to come. I avidly grabbed for the next book….

To be continued…..

Harry Potter Hype (2)

Harry, good old Potter. So I had been wrong about  good old famous Harry Potterand I reached for the next book…

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is most memorable for me by the whole flying car experience,I remeber in After School Club they had only one film and that was it. I remember how I  used to know the words off by heart and I would watch it every afternoon simply because I am like a moth to television screens. I can’t staring at them and it really annoys my friends they like to shout “Earth to Susie, earth to Susie are you there ?” I liked the film but when i came to thinking about it before I read the book all that would pop up was a picture of Malfoylooking catiously behind him and I don’t even know why. I do remember the flying car but had know idea which movie it was in.

I liked the Chamber of Secrets because it was a lot more mysterious and frankly a bit less predictable. Up until the end I was like who is it?Who is it,I bet it’s Malfoy. But JK Rowling was wise enough not to blame it on a slytherin but instead make it the accidental fault of sweet, innocent Ginny Weasley and a bit of dark magic from Tom Riddle.

By this stage there was no denying it I was a girl in the desert desperate for an oasis.I ran down stairs to find the next book…

Harry Potter Hype (3)

And so it continued …After reading the second one I couldn’t wait for the third to begin and I grabbed for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban. I stayed up till all hours reading it and personally it’s the best out of the first 3 of course I’d seen the movie so I knew about Peter Pettigrew but I became confused because I thought that Sirius was was a werewolf and was disguised as Lupin. The reason it was my favourite was because you feel against Sirius until we actually meet him and i love the scenes in the shrieking shack because everyone turns on Wormtail eventually and it’s magical!

Harry Potter Hype (4)

The Goblet of Fire didn’t beat the Prisoner of Azkaban but it came really close. If you love competitions in a story you feel tense and desperate to see who wins in the triwizard tournament. Mystery comes in once again with ‘Who bewitched the goblet and entered Harry? along with the mystery of Rita Skeeter  and the exciting ,brutal ending gets you hyped up for what will happen next.

Harry Potter Hype (5)

The Order of the Phoenix in my opinion was my least favourite Harry Potter book but by this stage it didn’t matter; all I could think was Harry Potter. I realised I was becoming more than a  fan but a HARDCORE fan. Maybe this is what it feels like to have ‘Bieber fever’ except instead of crushing on some seventeen year old pop star who sings like a girl, I am in admiration of a worldwide phenomenon series of books.

The thing that made it the worst so far was that it was (like the first) a mere introduction to the last books, the 6th and 7th (The Half Blood Prince and theDeathly Hallows) However it was exciting, very exciting, the sort of excitment that makes you want to scream (I know most JB fans can relate to this) ! The evil Professor Umbridge makes you hate the ministry and her dictatorship over the school makes your insides at the mere thought of such a horrible fictional character. As well as exciting the book is unfortunately infuriating at the same time. You have little clue about what the door means until the very end and it’s practically just as annoying as the line ‘and it was all a dream’.

I wish JK Rowling had put in more detail about the downfall of Umbridge. And then more of a confrontation to the ministry as to why they refused to accept Dumbledore and Harry’s warnings.

I may appear like I hate Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix but I still loved it and I looked forward to the sixth one which I couldn’t read because I was on holiday.

Harry Potter Hype (6)

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the one where Harry finds out what he’s working towards, what could get him out of this mess he was caught in. This book is interesting because it goes into more detail about Voldemort’s family and Voldemort’s past.

The first point I wish to bring up is that I was a tiny bit surprised he is only told about the horcruxes in the second half of the second last book. I would have thought that JK Rowling would have introduced it sooner and that’s not a criticism because if JK Rowling had introduced it too early then I could get bored of the horcrux idea.

Then Malfoy and the room of Irma. I loved how Harry can’t work out where Malfoy is going and what he’s doing. I also like how Harry answers his questions about Mafoy by mistake when he is trying to hide the Half Blood Princes potions book.

And the Half Blood Prince! I love the name because it’s so clever and mysterious. And when Snape admits that he is the Half Blood Prince you jump, well I did and I even knew it was Snape.

The Half Blood Prince is made up of lovely little mysteries which you try and solve before Malfoy tells you the answers on the tower. It’s an indulgent book and a fabulous start to the final battle…

Harry Potter Hype (7 and final)

The strange thing about the last book was that I’d seen the film so recently I could pick out bits of the book which were different. For example in the book Snape is killed in the shrieking shack, in the film he dies in a boating pond. When Voldemort dies in the book, they keep his body in a chamber ready to be buried but in the film he just flakes into nothingness .

The last book rounds off the series perfectly, it goes out with a bang. The first half is probably the worst  part of the books , it’s so depressing and boring, all failures and no successes . They aren’t doing much and the locket is making them grumpy and they aren’t anywhere near horcruxes and Harry is undesirable number one. It’s a very hostile scenario.

Personally the turning point is at the Malfoy manor, they manage to escape and rescue others and it’s very exciting. Something is happening. From there the path becomes clearer and they become more happy and active especially with the new excitement of the Hallows.

The scene where Harry is viewing Snape’s memories in a penisieve was a highlight for me because it’s a sad tale and you feel very sorry for him. It’s beautifully written from the moment where Snape and Lily first meet to when he comes to Dumbledore pleading for help. It exploits the true agony of love and losing one you love. As well as that it’s a shock to find that all these years Snape has put more faith in Dumbledore than in Voldemort.

The part in KIng’s Cross station was a ver peaceful scene all the dread you feel about Voldemort and death eaters and the innocent dead just disappears. It is an infomative part in the book because we learn more about Voldemort’s mistakes and Dumbledore’s regrets and that is interesting.

‘Just because this is all in your head does that mean it’s not real?’

Say’s Dumbledore and it’s an inspiring quote for me because it’s a question that we should ask our selves every so often.

The part  19 years later right at the end of the scene is a magical scene. It shows the now peaceful life of the Potter’s and the Weasley’s and how they see their children, the next generation off Hogwarts , school of witchcraft and wizardry. In conclusion Harry Potter is a rightfully successful book. It is thrilling, sad, mysterious, it is everything good about literacy.
